Scan & Pay, Thrive: Ethiopia’s Interoperable QR Code!

QR codes are capable of storing substantial data, and when applied to payments, it act as a seamless bridge between consumers and merchants, enabling instant, secure, and efficient transactions. In Ethiopia, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has mandated that all banks, payment instrument issuers, and payment system operators to implement the Ethiopian Interoperable QR Code Standards by FY 2024/25. This initiative aims to unify Ethiopia’s digital payment ecosystem, ensuring greater convenience for both merchants and consumers.

Previously, each bank or payment service provider operated its own QR code system, forcing merchants to display multiple codes and consumers to use provider-specific apps, leading to inefficiencies. With interoperable QR codes, a single QR code works seamlessly across all platforms. The process is simple: a merchant presents a QR code, and the consumer scans it via a mobile app to initiate a payment, with the transaction processed instantly.

The Ethiopian Interoperable QR Code Standards bring significant benefits, including greater accessibility, streamlined transactions, and improved efficiency for financial institutions. To ensure smooth implementation, the NBE oversees governance and regulatory frameworks, while EthSwitch, Ethiopia’s national payment switch, manages payment routing and messaging across service providers.

This mandate represents a major leap forward in modernizing Ethiopia’s payment systems. By fostering interoperability, it promotes financial inclusion, enhances digital transformation, and accelerates economic growth. More than just a technological upgrade, the interoperable QR code standard is a transformative step toward a more inclusive and efficient financial future.
